Field Leaders Make A Difference

When I first started my career as an agency owner back in 1983, I was young and eager, but didn’t have a lot of industry knowledge. Fresh out of career school, I was fortunate to have had a District Manager who took me under his wing. He was a mentor, a friend, a coach, a cheerleader, and, when needed, an authoritarian. I can say, without any hesitation, that he is the only reason I lasted in the business and became a success. Through the years, Jay became more like family—he and I remained close even after he retired.

It’s been some years now since Jay passed, but his legacy continues through me. It was Jay’s willingness to teach me, and to share his success, that guided me to becoming an industry leader and consultant— my passion. Jay taught me that helping others succeed will ensure greater success for yourself—a concept I live by to this day. I will always remember and hold dear all the memories of my great friend and mentor.

I tell you this story to encourage you to be a leader who is the backbone of your team—a leader who goes above and beyond to ensure the success of everyone who reports to you. Anyone can show up and fulfill the basic requirements. To leave a legacy requires passion, dedication and a willingness to roll up your sleeves and jump in.

Field Leaders have never been more important than today. However, we have hit an inflection point that requires new thinking and a different strategy. We must build on our past successes and add new capabilities to attract the agency owner of the future.
